Amazon will soon be opening a new fulfillment center in Dallas, making it the fourth fulfillment center located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. Currently, the company employs more than 1,500 people in its three area fulfillment centers. The new center is expected to bring hundreds of new jobs to the area.

Bringing Amazon to South Dallas

The new Amazon fulfillment center is scheduled to open on J.J. Lemmon Road at the northwest corner of Interstate 45 and Interstate 20 in South Dallas. The 500,000 square foot facility will be primarily used to process smaller items such as electronics, books and consumer goods. The facility will join two other facilities currently located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with one located in Coppell and the other in Haslet.

Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, the company is the largest Internet-based retailer in the country. Originally founded as an online bookstore, the company has expanded over the years to offer nearly every type of product imaginable. The company also produces a number of consumer electronics, including the Kindle e-book readers, Fire tablets, Fire Phone and Fire TV.

In order to expedite the process of delivering its products to its customers, Amazon has a number of fulfillment centers located throughout the country. Most of the fulfillment centers are located near airports so they can be shipped quickly. Each of these fulfillment centers also serves as a warehouse and as an order-fulfillment center for third-party sellers. Some of these sellers store their products in the warehouse for an extra fee, but many still continue to sell their products through other sites or through brick-and-mortar establishments.

Each of the fulfillment centers/warehouses located throughout the country has hundreds of employees who are responsible for four basic tasks, including unpacking and inspecting products, placing products in storage, picking out products that need to be shipped and initiating the actual shipment process. The new Dallas facility is expected to create anywhere from 500 to 900 jobs in the area. The average salary for the new positions will be around $30,000 per year.

Working Cooperatively With Texas Officials

To help bring the new facility and its jobs to the area, local officials have worked cooperatively with Amazon. In April, Amazon requested a tax abatement from the county. According to the company’s vice president of North America, the new facility was made possible by the fact that local communities have been so supportive of the company’s growth.

Currently, Amazon has four fulfillment centers throughout the state of Texas. One of these centers is located in Schertz, which is located near to San Antonio. The other three are located in Coppell, Humble and Fort Worth.

Amazon is just one example of a company that has found the business climate of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area to be appealing. In fact, many major companies are choosing to open their new facilities in the area, bringing thousands of new jobs to residents.
