BE CAREFUL…

For my Texas buyers after you buy a home you will receive a lot of mail that looks very official and that appears to be coming from your mortgage company.  The contents of these letters will address items like filing for your homestead exemption, getting you a copy of your deed, and life insurance offers.  There will be a charge for these services.  Before you pay anyone for anything, please call your realtor, lender or mortgage company if you have any questions.

Filing for your homestead exemption is free and will take just a few minutes of your time.  You do need to update your driver’s license to reflect the address of the home that you are filing the homestead exemption for.  This is very important this year, as the Texas legislature passed a bill that raises the homestead exemption for school taxes to $100,000.  This does need to be ratified by the voters in the November election, so please remember to vote. The increase in the homestead exemption may save a family about $1300 a year.

The title company that handled your closing will be sending you a copy of your deed. You won’t need to pay for this either.

Let’s talk about life insurance.  The life insurance offers that you receive will typically be just for your loan amount and this type of life insurance tends to be expensive.  As an adult you should have a life insurance policy to protect your family, please reach out to the insurance agent who helped you to get homeowner’s insurance as they would happy to help you with all of your insurance needs.

Consider your realtor a resource for any questions that you might have.  If you aren’t comfortable calling your realtor, please call or text me at 8173005754 as I would consider it a privilege to answer your questions.
