It is no secret that those who live in Texas are proud of their state and of their state’s heritage. For these reasons, it makes sense that North Texas would set aside a day to celebrate this heritage in a special way. Taking place on July 18th, the Texas Heritage Festival promises to offer educational opportunities as well as plenty of fun for the whole family.

Celebrating Texas Heritage

During the Texas Heritage Festival, participants get to celebrate all that makes Texas such as special state. Entertainment will be provided while local artisans will display their goods. Interactive children’s activities and historical demonstrations will also take place throughout the day. “Cow patty” tossing is among the events planned for children, while live music and other family-friendly entertainment is planned as well.

Participants will also have the opportunity to visit with animals and to explore nature, with one of the most popular attractions being the Native Texas Butterfly Garden. Of course, food will also be available for purchase at the festival. The event is presented by Clif KiD and sponsored by both the McKinney Community Development Corporation and Baylor Medical Center at McKinney.

Exploring The Heard Museum

The Heard Museum, more formally known as the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary, was founded in 1967. The museum features a 289 acre wildlife sanctuary as well as a natural science museum designed to educate children about nature.

Throughout the year, The Heard Museum has many great sites to explore. These displays and exhibits will all be available during the Texas Heritage Festival at no additional cost. Among these is the Pioneer Village, which is comprised of eight pint-sized buildings representing the buildings that were typically found in prairie settlements during the late 1800s. Among these buildings is a general store, a school house and a settlers’ cabin. The museum also has a Native Texas Snakes exhibit, a Mosasaur exhibit, a Living Lab and an Animals of the World exhibit.

The Texas Heritage Festival will take place on July 18th from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm at The Heard Museum, which is located at 1 Nature Place in McKinney, Texas. The price of admission is free to McKinney residents. Adults who are not McKinney residents will be charged $9, while Seniors sixty years old or older and children between the ages of three and twelve will be admitted for $6. Children two and under are free. To qualify for the free admission, you need to bring a water bill showing your McKinney address as well as a valid photo ID or driver’s license. Up to four people will be admitted for free per address.
