Those who are interested in Earth Science will be happy to know that The Heard Museum offers plenty of opportunity to learn more about the topic. In fact, the museum has special workshops planned for next month to cover topics such as rock and mineral identification as well as plate tectonics. While the classes are geared toward educators, anyone who is interested in learning more about the topics is invited to attend.

Erosion and Weathering Workshop

The Erosion and Weathering workshop will help to clarify the differences between erosion and weathering with the help of field trips and activities to show examples of both. Experiences will include going outside and looking at the fluvial system at the Heard Sanctuary while investigating the flood plan, abandoned oxbows, limestone highlands and the Blackland Prairie soils. The workship will also explore extinct animals and humans who lived in the area 25,000 to 12,000 years ago. Mining, particularly the role it has played in Texas, will also be explored.

The Erosion and Weathering Workshop will take place on August 6th fro 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. The cost is $25 per participant. The cost includes a DVD of all presentations as well as rock, fossil and mineral raffles and prizes.

Rock and Mineral ID + Plate Tectonics

At the Rock and Mineral ID and Plate Tectonics workshop, you will have the opportunity to identify rocks and minerals with a take home mineral kit. You will also learn more about mineral properties, including hardness, luster, fracture, cleavage and crystal form. The origins and classifications of Earth’s rocks will also be explored.

The Rock and Mineral ID and Plate Tectonics workshop will take place on August 5th from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. The cost is $30, which includes a rock kit, a mineral kit, a mineral test kit, a DVD of all presentations and rock and mineral raffles and prizes.

Rock and Mineral ID + Mineral Uses: Past, Present and Future

The Rock and Mineral ID class will cover many of the same topics as the August 3rd workshop while also exploring how minerals, including crystals, metals, oil and ores are used. The workshop will also discuss elements as well as the important mineral-fueled changes that are taking place. Atmining, particularly as it occurs in Texas, will be discussed as well as the role the state plays in industrial mineral production.

This workshop will be offered on August 5th from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. The cost of the workshop is $30, which includes a rock kit, a mineral kit, a mineral test kit, a DVD of all presentations and rock and mineral raffles and prizes.

All workshops will be offered at The Heard Museum, which is located at 1 Nature Place in McKinney, Texas. The Heard Museum is just one example of the many great resources available throughout the North Texas region.
