While it may be tempting to spend all of your time at the beach or enjoying the many amenities and attractions that North Dallas has to offer, the summertime is the perfect time to take care of some basic home maintenance projects. Here are a few projects to tackle this summer in order to keep your home looking great and in tip-top shape.

Clean Out the Gutters

Gutters tend to collect debris during the fall and winter months, so be sure to clear them out during the summer. Failure to clear your gutters on a regular basis can lead to water damage in your house. When propping a ladder against your house to clear out gutters, be sure to avoid propping the ladder against the gutters themselves or against electric wires. After scooping out the debris, use a garden house to flush out the remaining debris. Don’t forget to cleanse the downspouts as well.

Power Wash Your Home’s Exterior

To ensure your home looks its best from the outside, take advantage of the warm summer months to clean the exterior of your home. This can be accomplished by renting a power washer and using a mild detergent to remove tree sap, dust, dirt, bird droppings and other debris. To save yourself some extra work, clean your cutters before you power wash the exterior. This way, you won’t get debris from your gutters on your freshly cleansed siding.

Use Your Ceiling Fan Wisely

To ensure you are using your ceiling fans wisely and efficiently, make sure the blades are situated so the leading edge is higher when the fan rotates. This way, the cool air will be pushed down so it can cool down your house. This simple step can help you adjust your air conditioning so you can save energy and money.

Remove Lint from Your Dryer Vent

The summer is also a good time to make sure your dryer vent is clear of lint. The U.S. Fire Administration estimates that around 16,000 dryer fires occur each year, with most being caused by vents that are clogged with lint and other debris. To prevent this from happening, clean your dryer vent tubing with a vent-cleaning brush kit. If you don’t have a kit, remove as much lint as you can with your hands and then vacuum out the rest. Remember to disconnect the dryer duct from the dryer and wall in order to clean everything out thoroughly. The vent on the outside of the house should also be cleared of lint build-up.

Perform Deck Maintenance

While a deck is a great place to waste away the long summer days, it also needs to get some attention during the summer months. To ensure your deck stays in good shape, inspect it for cracks, rotten wood, curling or any other possible problems. Replace damaged boards and check the support structure to ensure you aren’t missing any nails or screws. Some experts also recommend refinishing your deck every year.
