In a celebration of theatrical solo performances, the Solo Fest will bring a mix of solo artists to the stage.

Produced by Audacity Theatre Lab, the 2015 Dallas Solo Fest will bring solo artists representing a variety of genres and styles. With many performers coming from within the Dallas region, it provides local talent with an opportunity to shine while residents gain more exposure to great theatre. The festival will also feature performers from other parts of the country, thereby providing a truly eclectic mix of talent to enjoy.

Solo Fest Provides Theatrical Artists With Opportunity to Display Their Craft

With a mission to celebrate solo theatre while increasing appreciation for the art form in the North Texas area, the Dallas Solo Fest is an annual event that is only in its second year. The festival is representative of the burgeoning Dallas arts scene, which has picked up a great deal of steam in the past few years. Among the eight solo performances scheduled to take place this year include “…And Then I Woke Up” performed by Kris Noteboom, “Lord of the Flies” performed by Lesley Tsina and “Standing Eight Count” performed by Van Quattro.

Located within the Magnolia Lounge at Fair Park, the Margo Jones Theatre is rich in history. Originally constructed in 1936, the Magnolia lounge was built by the Magnolia Oil Company. While the Magnolia Oil Company was later renamed to Mobil, the lounge has maintained its original name.

After its initial construction, the Magnolia lounge was used as a resting place for visitors to the Texas Centennial Exposition. It was at the lounge that visitors were able to watch films and enjoy some leisurely entertainment. In 1947, the lounge took a new direction when theatre director Margo Jones spearheaded the American Regional Theatre movement. She then staged “in-the-round” productions at the lounge and ultimately produced 85 plays within the theatre.

Following Jones’s death in 1955, the theatre halted productions. As a result, the lounge only served as a visitor’s center for Fair Park during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Today, the building is home to the offices for the Friends of Fair Park while the theatre space is utilized by a variety of different progressive theatre groups.

Performances taking place during the 2015 Dallas Solo Fest will last roughly one hour each. Tickets to the shows range from $12 to $60 each with free parking at the Margo Jones Theatre at the Magnolia Lounge. The Margo Jones Theatre is located in Fair Park at 1121 First Avenue in Dallas, Texas near the intersection of Grand and First avenues. It is bordered by the African-American Museum and the Old Mill Inn Restaurant.
