Five Texas Counties Serve as Hot Spots for the Tech Industry

While the San Francisco Bay has long been considered to be the tech mecca of the United States, sky-high real estate prices have made it difficult for startups to get established in the area. For this reason, it should come as no surprise to learn that many companies have been looking for alternative locations to set up shop.

For many of these companies, Texas is just the alternative location they are looking for. In fact, many Texas areas have been identified as tech hot spots due to the total number of tech companies they have to offer combined with the number of tech employees they have per capita.

Here’s a look at the top five Texas tech hubs as determined by FindTheCompany and Dun & Bradstreet.

Denton County

Ranked as the 5th hottest tech hub in Texas, Denton County received a tech score of 84.9. With 12.5 tech companies per 10,000 residents and 80.7 tech employees per capita, the county had a tech ecosystem score of 81.6. The tech ecosystem score reflects the variety of tech employees and companies in the area.

A portion of the cities of Dallas, Fort Worth and Plano are located in Denton County, as are other North Texas cities and communities.

Williamson County

Williamson County took the 4th place position with a tech score of 85.6 and a tech ecosystem score of 82.5. The county has 15.1 tech companies per 10,000 residents with 81.1 tech employees per capita.

Portions of the cities of Austin and Round Rock are located in Williamson County, which is located in the southern half of the state.

Dallas County

The third hottest tech spot in Texas is Dallas County, which received a tech score of 86.4 and a tech ecosystem score of 83.1. The county boasts 16.8 tech companies per 10,000 residents and has a 83.5 tech employees per capita.

The majority of the cities of Dallas and Richardson are located in Dallas County.

Collin County

Third place Collin County boasts a tech score of 88.3 and a tech ecosystem score of 85.6. The county has 25.4 tech companies per 10,000 residents and 83.3 tech employees per capita.

Portions of Dallas, Fort Worth and Richardson are located in Collin County, as are other North Texas communities.

Travis County

Travis County was the number one rated tech hot spot in the state of Texas. The county earned a tech score of 89.9 and a tech ecosystem score of 87.5. The county has 28.2 tech companies per 10,000 residents and 85.7 tech companies per capita.

Austin is the county seat of Travis County, which is also home to a portion of the city of Round Rock.
