University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas has received a $16.6 million award from The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. Approximately $12 million of these funds will go toward research grants while around $4 million will go toward recruitment of scientists. These funds combined with grants previously provided to the University of Texas Southwestern represents a total of $55 million the medical center has received from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas in 2015.

Referred to as simply UT Southwestern, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is one of the leading medical education and biomedical research institutes in the country. The long list of the medical centers accolades dates back to 1939 when Dr. Edward H. Cary, Karl Hoblitzelle and group of Dallas citizens organized Southwestern Medical Foundation. Southwestern Medical College was officially founded in 1943, making it the 68th medical school to be developed in the country.

At the time it was founded, Southwestern Medical College was situated in abandoned military barracks. Since then, the college has expanded significantly and boasts far more than a single medical school. Located in Dallas, the 231-acre campus now boasts for affiliated hospitals. These include:

  • Children’s Health
  • Parkland Memorial Hospital
  • William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital
  • Zale Lipshy University Hospital

The campus is also home to the UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, UT Southwestern Medical School and UT Southwestern School of Health Professions. Through these facilities, the medical center offers programs and services in Dallas as well as Forth Worth, Richardson, Waco, Wichita Falls and Austin.

Improving Cancer Treatments and Prevention in Dallas

University of Texas Southwestern has already made big plans for the new grant money that it has received, with the focus being on developing better methods for treating and preventing cancer. $5.59 million of the grant money will go toward cell biology professor Guadenz Danuser’s efforts to develop a bioinformatics program at the university. Bioinformatics is an emerging field that involves analyzing large amounts of data in an effort to identify cell patterns associated with cancer.

The $4 million in recruitment grants will go toward obtaining two new faculty members. The first, Maralice Conacci-Sorrell from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, has more than a dozen publications in scientific journals related to her research in the co-regulation of cell survival and motility. The other new faculty member, Andreas Doncic of Stanford University, holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on quantitative biology. Each new faculty member will receive $2 million to join the University of Texas Southwestern.

The focus of the new programs and faculty members will be to develop improved treatment options while also developing methods for preventing cancer. The research will primarily focus on breast and colon cancer prevention and screening initiatives.
