Kroger has purchased a tract of land along Hall Street north of Ross Avenue near the Dallas Arts District with plans to build a new urban grocery store in the area. While the company is not yet discussing when the store will open or how big it will be, the new purchase is part of Kroger’s growth strategy to build its urban and suburban market share.

Building a Presence in North Texas

Kroger has made it quite clear that the company wishes to expand its brand within the Dallas region. Already, the company has three urban grocery stores located throughout the city, including one in City Place. According to Greg Huddleston, who is the spokesman for Kroger, the company is continually looking for new areas where it can better serve its customers.

Founded in 1883 in Cincinnati, Ohio by Bernard Kroger, The Kroger Company is the second largest supermarket chain in terms of revenue. The company also falls behind only Walmart in terms of general retail and is the 23rd largest company in the United States. The company operates over 2,600 stores in 31 states, though it does not focus solely on grocery stores. In fact, the company also oversees jewelry stores, department stores and convenience stores. Most Kroger employees are union employees, with 75 percent being represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union.

Competing with Other Grocery Stores

While Kroger may be committed to building its brand in North Texas, it is not the only grocery store to take an interest in the region. Tom Thumb, for example, has plans in the works to bring a store to a tower being developed near Victory Park. Whole Foods will also have a store incorporated into the new Gable’s Residential project along McKinney Avenue.

In terms of market share, Tom Thumb is the third most successful supermarket in the Dallas/Fort Worth region. The chain of supermarkets has a distribution center in Roanoke, Texas with numbers stores located throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area. The chain is known for being slightly more upscale and expensive than Kroger.

Specializing in organic food, Whole Foods first opened in 1980. While the company has stores throughout the United States, Canada and the UK, it is headquartered in nearby Austin. The company has been included in Fortune magazines “100 Best Companies to Work For” every year since the list has been published in 1998.

As one of the most competitive markets in the country, Dallas is seeing a number of grocers making an attempt to set up stores within the urban core. Traditionally speaking, this demographic has been long underserved. As more companies realize the potential of this market, however, the number of grocers attempting to target the urban market is likely to continue to grow.

With all that North Texas has to offer to businesses and to its residents, it should come as no surprise that so many companies are interested in expanding throughout the region.
