Interested in learning more about the process of filmmaking? Whether you just want to find a better way to document your life’s events or you are interested in pursuing a career in filmmaking, the upcoming summer camps offered by the Dallas Film Society may be just what you are looking for.
Founded in 2006 by Liener Temerlin and Michael Cain, the Dallas Film Society is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that is dedicated to supporting the art of film. This includes providing support to filmmakers and providing film education opportunities throughout the year.
The Dallas International Film Festival is the biggest event hosted by the Dallas Film Society each year. As the largest cinematic event in North Texas, the event offers 11 days of studio and independent films each spring. To date, the society has hosted eight festivals and more than 1,300 filmmakers with over 10,000 film entries from more than 50 countries. The event has also awarded more than $690,000 in cash/pro-bono prices. The festival has shown 726 features, 792 shores, 84 world premieres and 27 U.S. premieres.
The Dallas Film Society also holds a benefit gala each year called The Art of Film. This event, which takes place in the fall, offers the opportunity to meet and speak with the recipient of the society’s Dallas Star Award. It also features a screening of the honoree’s films.
In an effort to educate the public in the art of filmmaking, the Dallas Film Society hosts High School Days. During this event, more than 400 teenagers from throughout North Texas have the opportunity to hear from speakers from within the industry as they learn about various aspects of filmmaking. The society also hosts High School Roundtables, which meets on a bi-monthly basis. At these roundtables, students have the opportunity to receive hands-on experience with the film industry as they visit and interact with production and music facilities, companies associated with the industry and live sets. The society also offers internships to area college students.
The Dallas Film Society will host two three-day camps this summer. The first, Production Boot Camp, will explore the techniques, language and process of filmmaking. Some of the techniques to be taught during the boot camp include:
The second camp, What Makes a Great Documentary, will explore documentary filmmaking. Skills taught in this camp will include:
Team building will also be a focus of this camp as students learn about “real world” storytelling.

What Makes a Great Documentary will take place from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm from July 13th through the 15th.
