Deep Ellum

Location:

Deep Ellum is an arts and entertainment district in East Dallas. It is located in close proximity to downtown Dallas, and the name is a derivative of “Deep Elm Street.” Deep Ellum lies directly east of US 75/Interstate 45.

Local Schools:

Deep Ellum is split north to south by Commerce Street. Residents are assigned to the following schools accordingly:

Elementary- Ignacio Zaragoza Elementary School (north), City Park Elementary School (south)

Middle- Alex W. Spence Middle School (north), Billy Earl Dade Middle School (south)

High-North Dallas High School (north),  James Madison High School (south)

Parks:

Deep Ellum is primarily an entertainment district, so parks are not a focus of this area.

Local Events:

There is no shortage of things to do in Deep Ellum. The district has a variety of live music venues, and there are consistently acts on and concerts for music enthusiasts. CODE (culture of Deep Ellum) events and the Dallas Rock Meetup Group offer monthly, multi-venue and artist events. Attractions and Shopping:

Deep Ellum is chalk full of bars, clubs, restaurants, and music venues. There are a variety of performing arts centers and art galleries as well. Deep Ellum is also popular for graffiti artists to showcase their work, although graffiti is not legal or encouraged here.

Area History and Information:

Deep Ellum got its start as an industrial portion of Dallas.  In the late 1800’s, the Munger Improved Cotton Machine Company was built here, and Henry Ford opened a plant here in 1913 to assist with the production of Model T’s.  Years later, the area transformed into a jazz and blues hub in the city, and then transitioned into an edgy and artsy area with a variety of musicians and artists setting up shop here.
