The Seventh Annual TriWaco Triathlon is scheduled to take place July 26th. By participating in the TriWaco Triathlon, you have the opportunity to swim in the Brazos River before biking on country roads and then taking a trip over one of the country’s oldest suspension bridge.

Show Off Your Athleticism with the TriWaco Triathlon

As the first triathlon in Texas, the Waco Triathlon started in 1990. While the triathlon didn’t take place for several years, it has been restarted in the form of the TriWaco Triathlon.

The TriWaco Triathlon offers both a Sprint and an Olympic Tri course. The Sprint course starts below the Historic Suspension Bridge with swimmers completing a 400 meter rectangular swim in Lake Brazos. While it is an open-water swim, the course is beginner-friendly with swimmers released in waves of 50. Furthermore, swimmers are never more than 50 meters from land while a Water Safety Director and lifeguards are both on hand. The swimmers cross beneath the bridge before exiting and riding a bicycle for 12 miles. Participants then run on a wide concrete trail along the river into Cameron Park, which is mostly shaded. The 5k run is flat except for the ramp that leads to the Herring Street Bridge. A water station will be located at the halfway point. The overall order of events for the Sprint will be:

  • 400 meter open-water swim with a 30 minute max swim time
  • 12 mile ride through the country
  • 5K run along the Brazos River.

In the Olympic event, the starting and ending points are both below the Historic Suspension Bridge. The distance, however, will be 1500 meters and swimmers pass beneath three additional bridges. After leaving the transition area, Olympic event participants leave downtown as they enter an open rural setting for a 25 mile bike ride. Support is provided for minor mechanical problems as athletes ride through a moderately flat and very fast area. The 5K in Cameron Park includes a 250-foot uphill climb. The route will include four aid stations. The overall order of events is:

  • 1500 meter open water swim with a one hour max swim time
  • 25 mile bike ride
  • 10K run along the Brazos River and Cameron Park
