Despite the fact that there has been a great deal of talk about the high-speed rail system that is being planned for Texas, many residents know little about what the actual plans that are in the works. While there are still many obstacles that need to be overcome before the high-speed rail system will be put into place, the possibility of bringing such advanced technology to Texas is quite exciting. Here is a look at what the high-speed rail is expected to bring to the state.

Fast Transportation From Dallas to Houston

Under the current plans, the high-speed rail system will connect Dallas and Houston on a system that is based on the Tokaido Shinkansen System used in Japan. Capable of reaching speeds of 205 mph, the rail system will allow passengers to travel between the cities in just 90 minutes.

Safety First

With such impressive speeds, it is only natural to be worried about safety. The same system that his being proposed for Texas has been used in Japan for over 50 years without safety issues. In fact, the Japanese “Bullet Train” has experienced zero passenger fatalities or injuries due to train accidents since the system has been put into place. Each N700-I Bullet system put in place in Texas will consist of a passenger train as well as overhead catenary, signaling and tracks all corresponding to the same protocols that have been used in Japan. In addition, while the trains will run every 30 minutes during peak hours, they will be stopped for six hours each night in order to undergo inspection and receive necessary maintenance.

Saving Energy

In addition to being a fast and safe mode of transportation, the high-speed rail is an eco-friendly solution to transportation. The high-speed rails used for transportation between Tokyo and Osaka use only 1/8 the amount of energy per seat and releases 1/12 the amount of carbon dioxide as a Boeing 777-200. In an effort to further reduce the environmental impact, the rail system is also slated to be built along land that is already impacted by transportation or other utilities as much as possible.

Relieving Traffic Congestion

The Texas high-speed rail will certainly have a positive impact on the environment by taking cars off of the road. This will also have a positive impact on traffic flow between Dallas and Houston. By 2035, the commute between Dallas and Houston is expected to reach 6.5 hours due to congestion. With the addition of the high-speed rail, this congestion will be alleviated for those who still choose to drive.

Currently, the high-speed rail system is expected to start as early as 2021, but it may take longer for the system to get put in place as the company in charge of the project navigates through the necessary paperwork and bureaucracy. Once the system is put into place, tickets will be available for purchase online in the same way an airline ticket can be purchased. The cost of a ticket has not yet been determined, but is expected to be competitive with the prices offered by airlines for the same trip.

While there are still many questions left to be answered about the Texas high-speed rail, the project is certainly one that will have many positive effects on Dallas residents.
