The Pocket Sandwich Theatre will welcome the Singapore Slingers on Tuesday, June 9th. Back for an encore performance, the Singapore Slingers will provide a night of music from the 1910’s, 1920’s and 1930’s. With the event taking place in June, it is aptly named “June Night at the Pocket Sandwich Theatre.” Understandably, some of the song choices will include those that pay homage to the month of June.
Led by Matt Tolentino since 2007, the Singapore Slingers is an 18-piece orchestra that performs pre-swing American dance music that dates from 1895 through 1935. The orchestra consists of three violins, a cello, a viola, a string base, a drummer and several brass instruments.
The Pocket Sandwich Theatre opened in 1980 when Rodney Dobbs and Joe Dickinson decided to open a theatre in a space that once housed a sandwich shop. At the time, the Greenville location was less-than-desirable, but the duo hoped to produce some comedies and melodramas in a relaxed atmosphere where audience participation was encouraged. Over time, the theatre started to host spoofs of classic horrors stories and science fiction. Today, the Pocket Sandwich Theatre is the last remaining dinner theatre in Dallas. In addition to building a loyal following, the theatre frequently hosts productions of comedies written by local playwrights. In its new location on Mockingbird Lane, the theatre is able to host bigger and better productions within its larger space.
In addition to providing musical entertainment for the evening, the Pocket Sandwich Theatre boasts a full food menu as well as wine and beer. The theatre is also currently running a show entitled “Always a Bride.” The comedy focuses on four friends who promise to be in each other’s weddings. The play mostly takes place 30 years after the promise was made.
Doors to the Pocket Sandwich Theatre open at 6:15 on the night of the June Night performance with the show beginning at 7:30. The family-friendly event costs $16 per ticket. The Pocket Sandwich Theatre is located at 5400 E. Mockingbird Lane, #119 in Dallas, Texas.
If you are unable to make it to the June Night performance at the Pocket Sandwich Theatre, you can also see the Singapore Slingers on the Fourth of July at The Kessler Theatre. The Singapore Slingers Patriotic Dance and Concert will take place at 8:00 pm with the orchestra performing everything from ragtime to Sousa marches. The Kessler Theatre is located at 1230 W. Davis Street in Dallas, Texas.
The Kessler hosts a variety of concerts throughout the year. A few other upcoming shows taking place at The Kessler include:
