North Texas will be among the first in the country to enjoy use of the AT&T GigaPower network, which will provide Internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second. The Dallas-based company will be targeting the area’s fastest growing rental markets as it expands its offerings to apartments and condos throughout the region.

Enjoying Faster Speeds with AT&T U-verse

Billed as U-verse with AT&T Gigapower, the 100 percent fiber-optic network is designed to provide fast Internet speeds while also helping to enhance the television viewing experience. According to the company, the network will allow users to download up to 25 songs in less than one second or to load an HD movie in less than 36 seconds. The network will also be available with Voice services, enhanced TV and DVR services.

Bringing Faster Internet Service to Dallas Home Owners

With its fiber-optic network built all the way to the home, the U-verse will only be available in certain markets. Those targeted for the service include those who are living in multifamily living units in Dallas and Fort Worth as well as Austin and San Antonio. So far, the company has already installed the service at SkyHouse Dallas, the Gables Uptown Trail and Strata in Dallas. Parkside at Legacy in Plano and Lakeside Urban Center in Las Colinas has also already received the upgrade.

The company is also working with homeowner associations, management groups, developers and property owners in an effort to further expand the availability of its high-speed Internet access. In addition, the company hopes to expand its network to single-family homes in 25 different markets in an effort to reach another two million customers.

To assist with the process of bringing U-verse to more customers, AT&T is working on merging with DirecTV. The $49 billion merge has faced some opposition, however, as some have expressed concern that the merger may result in higher prices for the consumer.

In fact, the Big Four network affiliate associations (ABC, CBS, FBC and NBC) have joined the National Association of Broadcasters in asking that the DirecTV be required to carry stations in all 210 of its markets before it is allowed to merge with AT&T. This would be consistent with the guidelines currently in place for satellite operators, who are required to carry all stations in any market where it carries any stations. Dish and AT&T U-verse currently provide local stations in all of their markets, but DirecTV does not deliver any stations in eleven of its markets. I

n 2013, DirecTV agreed to deliver local-into-local television service in all 210 of its markets, but has still failed to do so. Those who are opposed to the merger are concerned that the merged company will continue to deny services to those eleven markets unless DirecTV is required to provide the services before the merger is complete.
